What is an Authenticator App?

20 views 0 rrajvan

An authenticator app is a software application that generates time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs) or other forms of authentication codes for users. It acts as a second layer of security beyond passwords and provides an additional level of protection against unauthorized access to online accounts.

How Does an Authenticator App Work?

When setting up an authenticator app, users link their online accounts (such as Charge Anywhere Transaction Manager, email, social media, or banking) to the app by scanning a QR code or manually entering a unique key provided by the service they wish to secure. Once the account is linked, the app generates a unique, time-sensitive code that needs to be entered alongside the account’s username and password during the login process. The code changes every few seconds, adding an extra layer of security that makes it significantly harder for hackers to gain unauthorized access.

Examples of Popular Authenticator Apps:

Google Authenticator

Developed by Google, this app is widely recognized and used for two-factor authentication (2FA) across various platforms and services. It supports both TOTP and HOTP (HMAC-based One-Time Password) algorithms and provides a simple and straightforward user interface.
